Karwendel Nature Park, Karwendel Mountains, Alpine Park, Rißtal, Risstal, mountains, mountain forest, Vomp, Hinterriss, Tyrol, Austria

The Große Ahornboden is located at the head of the Rißtal, the Enger Tal, just before the village of Eng between 1080 and 1300 m above sea level in the municipal area of Vomp (district of Schwaz). The area is covered with numerous 300 to 600 year old and very gnarled maple trees. In 1966, 2409 trees were counted. It is unclear why this extensive tree population was able to develop in the area, which had been used as pasture land for centuries. Possibly cattle epidemics or the Thirty Years' War led to the fact that the valley floor was not grazed for a longer period of time. Mountain maples become about 500 years old.
