Mexico seen from space. North is at bottom. The large blue inlet at centre is the Gulf of California, also called the Sea of Cortez. It separates mainland Mexico to its left from the Baja California peninsula to its right. To the right of Baja California is the Pacific Ocean. Clouds (white) line the rugged mountains (dark brown) on the Baja. The small body of water at lower left is the Salton Sea in neighbouring California, USA. Photographed from the space shuttle Columbia during mission STS-040 in June 1991.
