Hundreds of Palestinians were holding the 25th protest against the Israeli naval blockade and siege on Gaza, with some demonstrators throwing stones towards the fence, and according to Gaza's Health Ministry at least 20 protesters were injured by live ammunition fired by Israeli soldiers located on the other side of the fence. During the protest, which has been organised by Gaza's National Authority for Breaking the Siege, a number of boats forming a Freedom flotilla also sailed off the coast of Gaza. According to the United Nations Office for Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the Israel's naval blockade on Gaza has seriously undermined the ability for Gazan fishermen to make a living in an already impoverished territory which has been under a tight Israeli air, land, and sea blockade since June 2007. Many attempts have been made over the years by flotillas trying to break the maritime blockade of Gaza by attempting to navigate to or from the coastal enclave, but they have failed to get major international attention on the dire humanitarian situation of the Palestinian enclave
