Ashokan inscription, 3rd century AD. Script- Brahmi, Language- Prakrit. Found at Kapileshwara. It reads" When King Devanama Priyadarshi Ashoka had been annoited twenty years, he himself came and worshipped this spot because Buddha Sakyamuni was born here. He also caused a stone pillar to be set up and made the village of Lumbini free of taxes and paying only an eighth share of the production."
