A shaman blows tobacco smoke over a cup of Ayahuasca, traditional Amazonian plant medicine used for visionary healing in peru
A man receives a cup of Ayahuasca, a traditional Amazonian plant medicine used to induce hallucinogenic visions and altered states of consciousness and facilitate healing. The indigenous ceremony takes place in a maloca in the Amazon jungle near Iquitos, Peru. The Shaman wears a kushma, a traditional robe embroidered in the designs of his plant teachers. Ayahuasqueros use this sacred medicine to treat patients with a holistic approach that encompasses physical, mental, and spiritual ailments. The medicine must be heavily refined to the point where it is a thick, dark brown or red liquid.
