For many years past English agriculturists have consumed animmense and constantly increasing quantity of sodic nitrate, im-ported from Peru. This salt, the good effects of which have beenabundantly confirmed by practice, was first brought into noticeby the researches of M. Kuhlmann, i by the more theoretical ^Experiences Chimiques et Aqronomes, * SERIES OF ]. ^ ^ n W] 1 epre sent the g enera la\ ACTION OF FERTILISING AGENTS 339 luxuriantly cjreen, but those in the plot which has received nopotash, and in that which has received no manure at all, a numberof copper-coloured spots begin to make their appearance, and shortlyafterwards begin to spread very rapidly, gradually extendingthemselves over the whole of the foliage, and drying up the plantas if a burning wind had passed over it. As for the potatoesthemselves they are hardly larger than walnuts, have a peculiarlydisagreeable smell, and do not keep well. With the normal manure the crop is from 8 tons to 10 tons16 cwts. per acre, but by suppressing the potash it falls to 2 tons16 cwts. Until lately I always thought that the leguminoste and thepotato were the plants which showed a special preference for potash, but the vine distances them in this respect in a most surprisingmanner. In the case of the potato
