Here we found the block-ships, Russell, •• Cornwallis, and Pembroke,some paddles, and several gunboats, both Frenchand English ; also fifteen mortar boats, and a largeconvoy of traders and colliers. On the 16th the Arrogant reported havinghad a sharp engagement with riflemen in a woodat Biorka, during which a rocket exploded thewrong way. smashing a boat, injuring several men,and causing the death by drowning of a midship-man named Story. \Ve found Nargen much cooler than it was by the mortars we hoped to astonishthe Russians, we were deeply interested insuccessful trial of them, which was made on the17th.
