Shanghai Museum. Replica of The egg-shaped kiln (or cai kiln)
(Exclusive for Alamy) The egg-shaped kiln (or cai kiln), shaped like half an egg lying horizontally, is a type long used at Jingdezhen. It developed from the gourd-shaped kilns of the late Yuan and early Ming period, and became especially popular in the Ming period. The kiln is 7-18 meters long, high and wide in the front, low and narrow in the rear. The firing is in reduction flame with wood as fuel. The model here shows the front part of Jingdezhen’s egg-shaped kiln of the Qing dynasty (A. D. 1644-1911)
