The length of the pipe mustbe as short as possible and yet give the great-est obtainable vertical Crusher and mixing plant at power house site the Bear River, about twelve miles above thepoint where that stream is crossed by the Nev-ada County Narrow Gauge Railroad. It isjust above the confluence of a small tributarycreek with the river. This, however, pro-vided but a very small portion of the flatnecessary for the foundations. The factor of keeping the necessary ex-cavation quantities as low as possible wasthe most troublesome, as the sides of the can-yon of the Bear River are very steep, due tothe fact that it is a typical Sierra stream, hav-ing a steep gradient and in high water seasona very turbulent flow. The general character of the bed rock, inthe immediate vicinity of the power house, iswhat is commonly called serpentine. Thisis a substance composed mainly of silica, mag-nesia and a little protoxyd of iron. It is greenin color. When it is cut away and left stand-ing at a steep slope, it flakes off in largemasses. Th2 surfaces of these have a highnatural polish. Serpentine
