Portrait format of road through Abinger Hammer village with 17th century clock with distinctive blacksmith anvil striker and weather vane in autumn sunshine near Guildford and Dorking Surrey England UK. View taken looking towards Guildford direction with The Abinger Arms in the background. September 2005 The clock is an instantly noticeable landmark in the main road passing through the village. Jack the Hammer, the little blacksmith on the clock, strikes the hour on his anvil. The clock was given in memory of the first Lord Farrer of Abinger Hall who died in 1899 and has a motto which states: “By me you know how fast to go!” The iron industry was very important to the county of Surrey in previous times and this clock commemorates its passing.
