X o tonly is thesight extra-ordinarilystrange in it-self, but it ischaracteristicto a degree—characteristic of the old Japan that has beendisappearing so rapidly during recent years. Forthis wrestling is the same to-day as it was twelvecenturies ago—or twenty centuries ago, traditionsays—and is of interest, therefore, not only to theloyer of athletic sports and to globe-trotters insearch of new sensations, but to the anthro-pologist as well. Japanese wrestling differs distinctly from thewrestling of other countries. Perhaps it is in-digenous, and to be classed, therefore, with thepoetry and the hot baths which Professor BasilHall Chamberlain says are the only things theJapanese have not appropriated
