Late 19th century ophthalmoscopy tool. Ophthalmoscopic tools are used to examine the interior of the eye and measure its optical properties. This is an ophthalmoscoptometer (or optometer) dating from 1880. The inscription (centre) names the two Belgian ophthalmologists who designed this instrument: Evariste Warlomont (1820-1891) and Constant Loiseau (1838-1890). The centre inscription names the manufacturer, the French Roulot company of Paris. Loiseau is considered the inventor of the optometer, a device that was used to diagnose myopia (short-sightedness).
