William Ramsay (1852-1916). Caricature of the Scottish chemist William Ramsay leaning on blocks with symbols of the major noble gases. Ramsay studied in Germany under Bunsen, obtaining his PhD in 1873. In 1894 He isolated a new gas from a sample of atmospheric nitrogen, identifying it with a spectroscope. It was a totally inert element which he called argon. Over the following years he isolated and identified helium, neon, krypton and xenon. For this work, Ramsay was knighted in 1902 and received the 1904 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. He was also awarded the Franklin Institute's Elliott Cresson Medal in 1913.
