A Tyne and Wear Metro train heads south over the Wearmouth railway bridge in Sunderland, England, UK

Wearmouth bridges connect Monkwearmouth and Sunderland over the river Wear. The older wrought iron railway bridge was completed in 1879 and the more recent steel road bridge in 1929. The Tyne and Wear Metro extension to Sunderland was opened in 2002 using the existing railway system between Newcastle and Sunderland.
