Women's Garden Group, Tera, west Niger: Ramata Hama, 38, one of 52 women in the local gardening group, preparing Meringa leaves she has just picked for her family's meal. Meringa trees grow easily in a harsh environment and provide food all year round. Last year's crop failure, due to poor rain and grass-hoppers, means that the community's cerial bank is empty. The garden provides both food and income for the families allowing them to send their children to school, buy animals and most importantly eat through the food crisis. Photo by Mike Goldwater
