He was absent in France during the early part of Edwardsreign, and suddenly appeared in arms in January 1554 in his nativecounty of Kent, as a protester against the proposed Spanish marriageof Queen Mary. It is probable that he was instigated to this byEdward Courtenay, Earl of Devon, and it is said that after his arresthe vainly urged Courtenay to exculpate him. The main point abouthis insurrection is that it was very nearly successful, and gave a veryrude shock to Queen Marys throne, which was only saved by thedevotion of the loyal Londoners and the energy of Lord WilliamHoward.
