Shortly before the commence-ment of the Civil War he began the study of law,but his spirit of patriotism led him to abandon hischosen profession for the time being and to enter themilitar}^ service, which he did, b}- enlisting as a Pri-vate in the Fifteenth Pennsylvania Cavalry, August18, 1862, his first service being in Pennsylvania andMar3dand during Lees first invasion. He partici-pated in the battle of Antietam, which occurred onthe 17th of September, 1862. At the close of thiscampaign his regiment was transferred to Louisville,Kentuck}^ where, on November 24, 1862, he was hon-orably mustered out, and commissioned as First Lieu-tenant and Adjutant of the Tw
