A panoramic view of Istanbul (formerly Constantinople), Marmara, Turkey c. 1900. The capital city in NW Turkey straddles the Bosporus strait, between Europe and Asia, the only passage from the Black Sea to the Mediterranean, at the confluence of the Sea of Marmara, the Bosporus, and the Golden Horn. Numerous mosques and churches are visible. There is much maritime activity. The Galata Bridge (centre) spans the Golden Horn opened in 1875 and was a pontoon of wood-iron construction. This view is from a long gravure/mezzotint print made from joined photos – a vintage 19th/20th century image.

There is much maritime activity with boats both large and small. The Galata Bridge (centre) spans the Golden Horn was the third at this site. It opened in 1875 and was a pontoon of wood-iron construction built by a British company (it was rebuilt in 1912 – this had to be removed due to a fire in 1992, to be replaced by a modern, two, storey construction). This view is taken from a large gravure/mezzotint print, made from several individual photographs joined together to make one panorama. It will look very grainy if used at too large a size – a vintage 19th/20th century photograph.
