A substation is a part of an electrical generation, transmission, and distribution system. Substations transform voltage from high to low, or the reverse, or perform any of several other important functions. Substations contain the specialist equipment that allows the voltage of electricity to be transformed (or 'switched'). The voltage is stepped up or down through pieces of equipment called transformers, which sit within a substation's site. Electrical substations are the interface between parts of the distribution grid and transmission systems.
