Male African lion (Panthera leo). Male lions are the only cats to have manes. Lions are sociable animals, living in prides consisting of one or two dominant males with several females and their offspring. Young males leave the pride around the age of two and a half years. The female members of the pride do the majority of the hunting, while the male spends most of his time relaxing in shady areas and forcibly takes a share of the food after the kill has been made. Lions are found in the savannah and scrubland of sub-Saharan Africa. Photographed in the Kalahari Desert, South Africa.
