During the period from 1880 to 1907, 16,150 pedigreed cattle were im- ported into Argentina, 14,624 of which were brought from the United liingdom; and in the two years 1907 to 1909 over 9000 head were imported from England alone.^ The extension of fencing has been an important factor in making systematic, selective cattle raising possible. At present, in place of the old native cattle, estancias are stocked with mestizo (half breeds), and in many cases more highly im- proved slock.
