The main highway, by which you enter the Province at West Lynne, on the Ameiican Boundary line, luns northward along the western side of the Red River. A branch office of the Canadian Custom House at Winnipeg has been (established at West Lynne, where yoo have to report your arrival and pass the necessary entries, and you wi)l find the officer in charge (Mr. Bradley), a most accommodating official, who will give you every assistance in his power. The steamers from the United States all stop here, and if you are a passenger on board with your effbots, you have nothing to do, as the olerk of the boat reports his manifest, but your personal luggage will have to be examined by the landing waiter, the same as at any 11- :'r port of entry in the Dominion. At West Lynne there is a Hudson's Bay Company Post with stores, &c., and shortly afterwards you come to a ferry which connects with the Town of Emerson on the opposite bank of the river. This latter place is in a most flourishing condition, and bids fair to become a large city in the near future. Its inhabitants are entei prising and liberal, and its position as the terminus of the Pembina Branch of the Cana- dian Pacific Railway, will undoubtedly make it a place of importance. Already, it can boast of several fine buildings, amongst which are one or two churches, hotels, acd several handsome stores. And the houses generally, as in Winnipeg, are all of a superior kind, no shanties being visible. There is also a Dominion Lands office established there for the con- venience of intending settlers, t-uting up land in the neighbor- hood. Before going further, I will now give you a short outline of the Red River, from West Lynne, until it empties into Lake Winnipeg. From the southern boundary of the Province, till you reach the lake, it is 104 mile
