Foreign workers on their day off make the central area of Hong Kong very crowded.
Sunday in Hong Kong is a unique experience. The central area is made traffic free for large parts, giving a socialising space for the many foreign workers who get the day off. The majority are Filipino domestic or child care workers. They fill the walkways and bridges over the roads with noise and the floors are covered with people engaging in being social – parties, chats, food, dancing, make up or just being together. The first time I saw it in 1998 I felt it was a sad thing but having seen it now for over 20 years of visiting the island I treat it as a joyous event. The people seem glad to be together and the atmosphere is positive and vibrant.
