The Bowes Museum was conceived by John and Josephine Bowes, and construction started in 1869. Neither John nor Josephine survived to see the museum completed and both are buried in the museum grounds. This Art Work by Rachel Emily Taylor in response to the ill health of Josephine who grew sicker and sicker as the work went on. Josephine continued taking potassium sulphide baths laced with sulphuric acid that turned her nails black. She grew more and more neurotic, was terrified by mice, but developed a liking for Rooks. The work depicts Rooks on a window looking south from the second floor of the museum.
