Now I believe that this was pub-lished among Thackerays ballads with the distinctstatement that it was adapted from the German ofChamisso, and his lines seem so much more pleasingin every way that I hope you will send your inquirerthe lines, a copy of which I here enclose. With duerespect to Mr. Thackerays abilities in other direc-tions, I think it will be conceded that Chamisso wasa better poet, and this little piece may or may nothave been written with a moral in view.
