2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers Corporal George Thompson's service number was 12215. He enlisted in August 1914. He was wounded during the Battle of Loos. He received the Distinguished Conduct Medal 'for conspicious gallantry and devotion to duty in working round the flank and capturing an enemy strong point which was holding up the company. In it were about fifty of the enemy. He afterwards beat off with loss all counter-attacks on his trench' (excerpt from The London Gazette dated 6 February 1918).
