Immature, Second Year, Great Black Hawk in Portland, Maine. 2018
An immature second year Great Black Hawk (GBLH) appeared in Portland, Maine (Northern New England) in autumn of 2018. This large bird is native to South America and until this time was not seen north of Texas in the United States. The Great Black Hawk stores food supplies and prefers to eat on the ground as opposed to perched in a tree. It appears to be mostly tolerant of the human element that has gathered to view it but is cautious with selecting where to gorge itself on the many squirrels that have become its food supply so far from its natural habitat.
