British soldiers of the Corps of Royal Engineers stand and sit on a temporary bridge, during or soon after the First World War
British soldiers from the Corps of Royal Engineers, also known as 'sappers', stand and sit on a temporary wooden bridge as they pose for a group photograph taken either during or soon after the 1914-18 First World War. A section of a pontoon bridge, with timbers lashed to large barrels, lies on the shore beside them, with more barrels in the foreground. The photograph was probably taken at the Royal Naval Dockyard on the Medway at Chatham, Kent, England, UK. This photograph is from a collection of memorabilia saved over a long life of service in the British Army by a senior officer in the Corps of Royal Engineers. After fighting in WW1, he spent much of the inter-war period training Royal Engineer 'sappers', and was recalled from retirement early in WW2 to help train a new generation of soldiers to build Bailey bridges and other types of temporary crossing for the D-Day Normandy Landings in Occupied Europe in June 1944.
