Here upon this spot on the 26th of June, 1863, Sergeant George was shot. He enlisted on the 20th day of June, 1863, and was musteredinto the United States service on the 23d of June, 1863, in Company B, Twenty-first Pennsylvania Cavalry. He was born and spent his short life in Adamscounty, State of Pennsylvania, in 1840, within a few miles from this place. Atthe very inception of the great battle here at Gettysburg, on the advanced lineof cavalry videttes, he was the first man shot and killed in the great struggle,which for three days and nights made the ground on which we now stand .shakea
