The beautiful Hudson River was be-fore them, and an immense tent sheltereda number of long tables, on which theevening meal was spread. As our partyapproached, the children came running tomeet us with happy shouts of welcome:clinging to Mr. Klopsch with all the natu-ral affection of boys and girls, who know,and love, their benefactor. Every slum ofNew York had its representative in somehalf-fed miserable little lad or lass : andthe marvelous thing to me was the rapiditywith which they had accustomed them-selves to the pleasant comforts and re-straints of decent living. Many had neverbefore known the luxury of a bed. or ofproper bed-clothing: yet they crept be-tween the white sheeting with little ex-clamations of delight: and in some cases,. TENNESSEES OLDEST SUNDAY SCHOOL. when they went back to the city, asked per-mission to take their bed back with them. Three lessons are taught in this Home:To love God. to love their country, to begentle and courteous to each other. Inthe pretty little chapel of the Home, theygathered with an orderly rapidity thatshowed, not only kind, pleasant discipline,but a remarkable teachableness. Theirhappy voices blended sweetly in song andprayer, and the short service was enjoyedbecause they were not mere listeners, butin all the simple exercises, took an activeshare. As they came out of the chapelthe supper belt rang: and they ran joy-fully towards the tent: the boys rangingthemsebes in a double tile, between whichthe girls passed : the boys dotting theirtaps as they did so: a little lesson of I OUItesy to sex which will not be withoutgood influence.
