They heard him saythat he had tried to hide the horses and mules inthe swamp, but some of the negroes had carriedthe foragers in blue to the hiding-place. Theyheard Aaron say that he had carried Timoleon toanother part of the plantation, and that the oldhorse was not likely to be found. They heardtheir grandfather tell Aaron that he was now freeto go where he might — that he was no longer aslave. To which Aaron replied that if he wasfree to go or stay, he would stay. A little later the children, still standing at thewindow, or near it, heard a gTeat clatter of hoofsin the avenue, mingled with the lowing of cattle, the neighing of horses, and the shouts and yells ofdrivers. At first Buster John and Sweetest Susan,. TWO SOLDIERS RODE ALONG THE ARMY MARCHES BY. 189 looking through the mist, could see nothing but adense and moving mass of animals and men. Butin a few moments they were surprised to see thatthe foragers in blue were bringing back thehorses and cattle they had driven off. There wasthe old pony, ambling back to the lot; there werethe carriage horses ; and there were the milk cowsand dry cattle. Accompanying the foragers, whowere on foot, were two or three mounted men,and one of these wore a sword and was givingorders. The grandfather, attracted by the childrenscries of surprise, had come to the window, and hestood there gazing at the spectacle in a bewilderedway. It was more surprising to him than it wasto the children. He could make nothing: of it. o He could only rub his eyes and look. Here werehis horses, his mules, and his cattle coining: back O in a hurry, driven by the soldiers in blue.
