The ease with which Peach trees may be cultivated, their comparative freedom from disease, the short period before they become productive, with the immense demand for the fruit and the facilities with which it may be shipped to distant mar- kets, make peach growing extremely profitable. To secure healthy, vigorous and fruitful trees, the ground must be kept clean and mellow, and it should receive an occasional dressing of wood ashes. It should be remembered that peaches are all borne on wood of the previous season's growth, and that this makes it absolutely necessary to prune the trees yearly, to remove dead branches and let in light and air, and keep the trees in good shape to produce bearing wood. {/ ) for freestone ; (c) for cling; [s-c) for semi-cling. Alexander Medium size ; skin greenish white, nearly covered with rich red ; flesh melting, juicy, sweet. Tree vigorous and productive. July, (c.) Amsden Originated at Carthage, Mo., in 1882. Medium size ; skin greenish white, nearly covered with purple in the sun ; ripens with the Alexander and closely resembles that variety, but some think it a little higher flavored. July. (r.) Barnard's Early Medium to large : yellow, cheek purplish red ; flesh yellow, red at the stone ; juicy, sweet and rich. First to middle of September. {/.)
