Mars. The planet Mars drawn in 1912 by Greek astronomer Eugene Michel Antoniadi (1870-1944). The illustration is based on his observations at the Observatory Meudon near Paris. Early in his career Antoniadi claimed to have seen canals on the surface of Mars, although while working with the powerful telescope at the Meudon Observatory, he revised his theory, deciding the canals were an optical illusion. His detailed reports about the Martian surface laid the foundations for modern investigations.
