Taro leaf structure. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a section through a taro (Colocasia esculenta) leaf. The outer layers (epidermis) of the leaf are made up of circular cells. The leaf interior contains palisade mesophyll (bright green) and spongy mesophyll (yellow). The palisade cells contain chloroplasts, sites of photosynthesis. At left is a vascular bundle (grey) made up of xylem and phloem vessels, which transport water, nutrients and hormones around the plant. Magnification: x200 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
