Operation Defense I. Captain Oscar Carl Rohnke, USCG Commanding Officer, Coast Guard Icebreaker Eastwind, receives an autograph for his scrapbook from Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd, USN (Ret), Head of U. S. Antarctic Programs, and veteran of four previous Antarctic expeditions. Watching (left) is Captain Carlos W. Thomas, USCG, who as a result of his knowledge and five years' Arctic experience and Antarctic experience on the 1946-1947 expedition as commanding officer of the Coast Guard Icebreaker Northwind, was assigned to duty under the Chief of Naval Operations as Chief of Staff for Commander, Task Force 43. The scene takes place in the Eastwind's cabin, November 10, 1955, day of ceremonies for the departure from her homeport at Castle Island, Boston, with personnel and cargo to participate with the Navy's Task Force 43 in "Operation Deepfreeze I." This was the beginning of a new epoch in the icebreaker's long, colorful polar history.
