LOUIS, MISSOURI IN following a routine for gastromtestinalexaminations—wherein a preliminaryradiogram of the patient was taken inanteroposterior direction—of the kidneys,gall-bladder and lumbar spine, there havefrequently been observed solutions otcontinuity of the transverse processes ofthe lumbar vertebrae, usually unilateral, but at times bilateral. These were diag-nosed as congenital anomalies, and thequestion of pathology was never brought. Fig. I. Unilateral lumbar rib simulating fracture of thetransverse process of the first lumbar. up. These cases were ne\er reported asshowing pathology of the spine in thepreliminary radiogram. On one occasion, a case reported asnegative on the preliminary examinationwas reported back as ha\ ing had a roent-gen-ray diagnosis of fracture of the trans-verse process of the first lumbar \ertebraabout three years previously. On re-exami-nation of the film, it was found that thetrans\erse process was di\idcd into aninner two-thirds and an outer line of division was sharp, somewhatcurxed, with the concavity directed lat-eralU. The margins of the bone weresmooth and clearly outlined, and there was no calcium-salt absorptuMi present. In\iew of the history of an injury to theback in this case, comparison of the radio-gram with other cases showing similardivisions of the transverse processes wasmade. No
