A boy puts tents poles together as his crew sets up camp at the base of Mount Shasta, Shasta Trinity National Forest,

Boys age 13-17 from the Venturing Crew 191 from Glendora, California put a year of training into practice as they attempt to reach the summit of Mount Shasta via the Avalanche Gulch route, Shasta Trinity National Forest, Northern California. Mount Shasta, is a massive, glaciated volcano and at 14,179 feet, is the second highest peak in the Cascade Range, and the fifth highest in California; it is not connected to any other peak and rises abruptly 10,000 feet from the surrounding terrain. The scouts from Venturing Crew 191, (Venturing Crews are a branch of the Boy Scouts that concentrate on adventurous activities) had prepared for a year for their ascent of Mount Shasta, this was their first experience with climbing on steep snow and they were assisted in their ascent by guides from SWS Mountain Guides. Jeremy Kolbach, puts tent poles together as he and others from Venturing Crew 191 put up their first camp, on a snowy ridge at about 8000 feet, at the end of an acclimatization day. They will move to a second higher camp at about 10,000 feet from where they will make their climb of Mount Shasta via the Avalanche Gulch route, Shasta Trinity National Forest, Northern California.
