Orchid flower (Dendrobium spectabile). The brown- lined petal (lower centre) is called the lip, a specialised petal that attracts pollinators and provides them with a landing platform. This orchid is found in New Guinea and the Solomon Islands, where it grows in trees (it is epiphytic). This specimen is from the Solomon Islands. There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers.
