WD-40, a light penetrating oil marketed by the WD-40 Company of San Diego, California. The name derives from Water Displacement - 40th formulation . It is a combination of a low-viscosity oil with a very light volatile hydrocarbon. This allows the product to be sprayed, but once the volatile has evaporated the low-viscosity oil remains in a thin coat. WD-40 is used to clean metal components and free stuck items such as zips and bolts that are partly rusted, as well as providing a water-repellent coating to metals.
