Modern shops in the ground-floors of Brooklyn's early 20th century skyscraper district. Population increase and transportation improvements caused building heights in Downtown Brooklyn to rise onward of the 1890s. The tapering tower, pyramid top, Art-Deco, neo-Gothic, 30-storey former Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce Building, rising in the centre of this shot, dates to 1928. It was hoped the area of new skyscrapers centred on Brooklyn Borough Hall (now referred to as the 'Borough Hall Skyscraper Historic District') would become a financial and commercial district to rival Wall Street.
