Management of Womans Nipples. the management oe the nipples before thebaby is born. It is very important during the last few months ofpregnancy to devote considerable time and attention tothe condition of the nipples. If these be found longand round, well projecting, then it is advisable to try toharden them, because the irritation from the child willcause considerable trouble unless we seek to prevent Fig. 15.—Nipple-shield for Relief of Tender Nipples. For this purpose wash, in winter, with lukewarm waterto which some alcohol has been added (2 - teaspoonfulsof alcohol to a cup of lukewarm water). In summer coldwater will be found more agreeable, using the same quan-tity of alcohol. If the nipples are very small and flat,and do not protrude properly, then suction by means ofa breast-pump, applied directly over the breast, will drawthem out. In some instances an ordinary clay pipewhich has a smooth bowl, the bowl to be laid over the (89) 90 INFANT-FEEDING. nipple and the stem to be sucked or drawn, is saticfac-tory. This is to be repeated every few days. A fewminutes of drawing out will suffice until the nipples aresufficiently prominent. Biedert22 gives the followingprescription for hardening the nipples:— Tannic acid 1 teaspoonful. R
