Asian citrus psyllid (Diaphorina citri) larvae feeding on a citrus stem. These insects transmit the bacteria that causes citrus greening disease. Also known as huanglongbing (HLB), the disease causes mottled leaves and small, bitter fruits that remain partly green even when ripe. There is no cure. An adult psyllid that is not infected with HLB must feed on an infected tree for many days before it becomes infected with the bacterium. In contrast, psyllid nymphs developing on HLB-infected trees can acquire the disease just before reaching the adult stage, and can immediately transmit the disease to uninfected trees.
