It was herethat General Washington learned of the captureof Greneral Lee, who, having been left in commandof the army on the east side of the Hudson, hadconstrued, in his own way, the urgent, not to sayperemptory orders that Washington had sent himrelative to prompt cooperation. From November17 to December 2 General Lee had debatedwhether to join in the retreat or wait for rein-forcements from the Northern army. At last, de-ciding to advance, he occupied from the 4th to the11th of December in crossing the Hudson and inreaching Morristown. Upon the 12th of December Lees army was atVealtown, now Bernardsville, while he occupiedas his headquarters Whites Tavern at BaskingRidge.
