Although apparently most closely related to cardinalis, it more nearly resembles peninstdaris and erythrothorax in color. From peninsularis it is readily separated by the characters of the Mutilata Group and from erythrothorax by the char- acters given in the key to the species of the Mutilata Group. The first instar larva of mutilata has been described by MacSwain.
