The construction stakes at the time of thelocation were placed opposite each stationand each half station and far enough to oneside not to be liable to be disturbed. Dur-ing cross-sectioning the elevation to the near-est one-hundredth foot of each stake topwas determined. As the adopted prolile ofthe road was shown on the plans, to deter-mine the cut or fill on center line it wasonly necessary to make a simple computation, using the profile grade elevation and theelevation of the top of the stake. This cutor fill was then marked on the side of thestake which faced the center line; one of theassistant resident engineers did this marking, and he could mark as many as three miles ofstakes in a day. With the stakes construction foreman could, with a levelrod and hand level, determine the elevation road the concrete pavement w-as 4 ins. () thick, with a crown of 2% ins.
