Some are very showy, willi large Ilowers. These are nsually white, pink or violet in color. The seeds are very intcresliiin and alTord valnalile characters for dassiiicatioii. Tliey are very small, hrown in C(vl(r, and are often covered with tiny ])rojectioiis like the papilhe of the tonnne. They are furnished witli a tiift of hairs or "; wiiich is ini outgrowth from the seed-coat. Tl:e:.e hairs are white, lawny, or c'linanion-colored. l!y means of them tlie seed is carried a long ilistance hy the wind -'hat cliief of .sowers. I,ike many plants of high northern latitudes, IJpiloliiiim Uatifolinm is widely distributed in the nortlierii hemisphere. It occnrs in Arctic America, I'lurope and Asia.
