Smoke was to behenceforth our only defence, to^ether with occasionalwhiffs of wind ; but dead calm to us meant perfectagony. The Admiral tried to console us by sayingthat this was mere childs play in coniparison with whatlay in store for us, especially on the Ganal tundra,or marshy waste, and his forebodings proved correct.
