Queen Margaret was the wife of Henry VI of England. It was the time of the War of the Roses and Henry was fighting for the English throne. The year was 1461. At Hexham, Henry met a great defeat and his wife and their son, the Prince of Wales, fled for safety. Robbers stopped them and took all they had and then began to fight among themselves as to who would have what. Margaret escaped with the prince. They fled to the forest but there met a robber armed with a sword as seen here. Margaret begged that he keep her son safe - the outlaw took pity and showed them his cave.

They hid there for two days and were cared by the robber's wife. Margaret was finally reunited with her husband, who also had escaped. This drawing by Edward Dalziel accompanied Charles Dickens' account of the tale in his book "A Child's History of England."
