Beplacements Add to Expense. The item of replacements is another cost that many of us do not take into consideration and, while it is something that should not enter into the business on account of its abuse, it has become a custom to make replacements under certjJn conditions and in many in- BtShces it is carried to extremes. How- ever, whether great or small, it is a cost that must be charged against either the growing or the selling of the stock. In years gone by these items did not appear to be worth bothering with, but with the increased cost of production they must be taken into consideration, as they may mean the difference be- tween success and failure. The point I wish to make in bringing out these matters is that many of us do not know what our stock costs us. If we did, we should either go out of busi- ness or grow less of those varieties that are the most hazardous. Not many of us would grow stock that we knew would not sell for more than 20 cents under the best conditions, if we knew that it was going to cost us that much to grow it; but when we fool ourselves into believing that it is only going to cost us 10 cents, we go blindl
