The image shows a shoot at the base of a Dawn Redwood. These trees are protected by law in China as there may be as few as 5,000 growing in the wild. In recent times many trees have been felled to make way for rice fields. However, recent plantings as an ornamental tree may keep the species alive and it is often found in parks and large gardens.
